Fourteen members of the Mt. Vernon FFA Chapter attended the 81st Illinois FFA Convention in Springfield on June 9-11, 2009. While in Springfield, members receievd multiple awards for their hard work and dedication over the past year, and was named the 9th highest FFA Chapter in the State. The following is a list of awards won at convention.
On June The Mt. Vernon Agriculture Department and FFA Chapter were named the top program in state in student development at the Illinois FFA Convention, held June 9-11 in Springfield. Mt. Vernon was chosen first out of over 300 agriculture departments in Illinois. This is the first time that Mt. Vernon has won this coveted award. Agriculture departments nationwide are judged on three areas: student development, chapter development, and community development. Agricultural education prepares students for successful careers and a lifetime of informed choices in the global agriculture, food, fiber, and natural resources systems. Way to go Mt. Vernon!
The dairy cattle evaluation team finished 33 of 83 teams at the state competition on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. Congratulations to Amelia Ellis, who had the high score of the team. Other team members included Kelsey Allen, Josh Donoho, Bryson Owens, and Nick Torrez.
The horticulture team also competed on April 28. They finished 14 out of 33 schools. The high member on the team was Taylor Morgan. Other team members included Alyssa Moffitt, Cody Goza, Frankie Skobel, and Ryan Wellmaker. Good work team!
Congratulations to the Mt. Vernon FFA Livestock Judging team, who finished 4th out of 133 schools that competed in the state competition on April 28th. Team member Kane Austin finished 2nd place out of 626 individuals. Team members included Kane Austin, Cody Rector, Brent Daniels, Craig Vishy, and Caleb Staples.
The Mt. Vernon FFA Chapter hosted its annual blood drive on Tuesday, May 5th. The day was successful, as 103 students and staff attempted to give blood, with over 70 being able to donate. Thank you to all who donated blood, as well as the businesses and individuals who donated their time and/or support!
On April 17, 11 members of the Mt. Vernon FFA traveled to SIUC to compete in Livestock and Dairy Judging Career Development Events held in conjunction with SIUC's annual Agriculture Industry Day. After competing, FFA members attended the Agriculture Industry Day, learning about career opportunities in agriculture and programs and organizations offered at SIUC.
Dairy judging team members included: Kelsey Allen, James Clark, Bryson Owens, and Nick Torrez. Livestock judging team members included: Kane Austin, Cody Rector, Caleb Staples, Craig Vishy, and Kristin Wetzel, and alternates Brent Daniels and Kyle Willmore. Congratulations to the livestock team for placing 6th out of over 40 teams!
The Mt. Vernon FFA and Adams' Farm put on the 11th Annual Safety Day Camp on April 16, 2009. Over 350 3rd and 4th grade students from nine area schools attended. While there, they learned how to use safety around animals, boats, ATV's, grain, heavy machinery, power tools, lawn mowers, chemicals, and electricity. Students also learned about hand sanitation and what to do in case of a fire, medical, or weather emergency. Thank you to all who attended and all who helped make this year's camp a success!

The Mt. Vernon FFA placed 6th in the State Agricultural Issues Career Development Event on February 14, 2009. The CDE was held at Western Illinois University, but team members competed via closed-circuit television at Rend Lake College.
SIx members of the Mt. Vernon FFA Chapter are advancing from section competition to district competition with their Supervised Agricultural Experiences.
Sixteen members of the Mt. Vernon FFA Chapter attended the Made For Excellence Conference in Collinsville, Illinois on January 23-24, 2009. While there, FFA members gained skills in excellence and personal choice, will power, and values.
Barack Obama may have won the presidential election, but the majority of students in the Mt. Vernon agriculture department wishes the election had a different outcome. Each year, the agriculture department holds a mock election. This year, the McCain and Palin earned 78 votes, while Obama and Biden received 63 votes. Regardless, congratulations are in order to Barack Obama and we hope for a successful and prosperous four years under his leadership.
The Mt. Vernon FFA and agriculture department does not endorse any particular candidate, and all views expressed are soley the opinion of the individual.
Eighteen members of the Mount Vernon FFA Chapter, along with four alumni members and two advisors, attended the National FFA Convention, held in Indianapolis, Indiana on October 22-25, 2008. While at convention, the Mount Vernon FFA was recognized for being a two-star national chapter, and Anthony Graham and Timothy Oliger received their American FFA Degrees. FFA members attended convention sessions, the National Agricultural Career Show, and the Bulls and Broncs rodeo. They also saw James Otto and Taylor Swift in concert, and toured the National FFA Center and Indianapolis Motor Speedway.

Kabat and Cherie Rogier.
It's taken awhile to get this site updated, but it should be steadily getting better. This new school year has been extremely busy. The first quarter ends this Friday, making a fourth of the year over. Our participation has been extremely high. I'll keep working to post events and pictures.

Twelve members attended this year's State FFA Convention in Springfield. Mt. Vernon FFA spent much of it's time walking across stage to receive awards. Check back soon to see a full article on the happenings.
Lamanda Bean and Lacy Pranga accepted the Heritage award. Our Chapter placed 4th in the State with the Heritage program.
Stephen Chambliss and Austyn Taylor accepted the Cooperative Program award. Our Chapter placed 1st in Section 21 this year.
This year's Horticulture CDE team took 7th Place in the State Horticulture Contest at the University of Illinois. Team members included: Travis Bond, Levi England, Nick Youngs, Paige Pipher, and Stephen Chambliss. The team competed in plant identification, judging rings of plants, plant knowledge, floriculture, and a landscape division.
The Mt. Vernon FFA Alumni Association handed out three scholarships at this year's FFA Banquet. Stephen Chambliss, Bridget Ray, and Lacy Pranga each took home a $400.00 scholarship for the coming school year. Each plan to attend Rend Lake College in the Fall.
Seven Seniors were recognized at this year's Mt. Vernon FFA Banquet for Outstanding Service and Dedication to the Mt. Vernon FFA over their high school careers. Those receiving the award included: Cassie Bruns, Tabatha Bernard, Mica Bernard, Stephen Chambliss, Nick Catron, Tomas Vasquez, and Aaron Sechrest.

Senior Mt. Vernon FFA members, Lacy Pranga & Stephen Chambliss, took the top awards at this years Mt. Vernon FFA Banquet. Pranga took the Good Ole Boy and Dekalb Outstanding Senior awards while Chambliss claimed the WMIX Outstanding Senior Award.
This year's Horticulture CDE team took 2nd place in Section 21 Horticulture CDE. The team had to identify 100 plants, judge 8 rings, and take a knowledge test. Team members included: Paige Pipher, Travis Bond, Levi England, Nick Youngs, Stephen Chambliss, and Lacy Pranga.
Lacy Pranga, Senior Mt. Vernon FFA Member, placed 1st in State FFA Proficiency at the University of Illinois on April 5, 2008. Pranga's SAE was in the area of Aquaculture based on her family's fish ponds. Lacy had three years of records that helped her to win Chapter, Section, District, and State competitions.
PRANGA TAKES 4th IN AGRIBUSINESS CDE !!!
Lacy also took 4th place at this year's Agribusiness CDE at Rend Lake College. She will receive a tuition waiver from Rend Lake College for the 2008-2009 school year!
Congratulations to Kaitlyn McLearin, Robert Ridgley, and Mallory Adams who recently competed in the Section 21 Public Speaking CDE at Kaskaskia College. McLearin competed in the Prepared Public speaking area and placed 2nd overall, Adams competed in the Extemporaneous division and placed 3rd overall and Ridgley competed in the Creed division and placed 5th overall. McLearin will now travel to SIU-C to compete in the District competition in April. Congratulations to the nine FFA members from Mt. Vernon High School who attended the two day National Leadership Conference at Collinsville Holiday Inn on the 18th and 19th of January. The following students completed the two day leadership conference with 580 other Freshmen and Sophomores in Illinois: Mallory Adams, Kaitlyn McLearin, Cody McLearin, Josh Donoho, Josh Bravard, Jonathan Hawkins, James Clark, Robert Ridgley, Rhiannon Marquis. The students learned how to strive for excellence, respect others, recognize how to help others.

Nineteen of Mt. Vernon’s finest FFA members traveled to Indianapolis, Indiana for the 80th National FFA Convention. The event was held on October 24-26, 2007.
This year’s convention was packed full of exciting activities for the National FFA to attend. The theme for this year was “Blue Jackets, Bright Futures” and was hosted by the National FFA Officers. Students were able to attend exciting sessions which featured keynote speakers such as, Rick Rigsby, retiring addresses by the National Officer team, and hundreds of awards given out by the National FFA.
Our Chapter was represented by Seniors Lacy Pranga and Stephen Chambliss on stage to receive our Triple Gold Award for being one of the top FFA Chapters in the Nation.
Sophomore Lamanda Bean had the opportunity to perform as one of the National FFA Talent participants. She was able to sing eight different times during the event.
Anthony Graham, 2006-2007 Mt. Vernon FFA President, also represented our Chapter as an Illinois delegate and in the Agri-science Fair.
Our Chapter had a great time and made a lot of wonderful memories. Great job to everyone who attended!
This years Land Use CDE team took 2nd place overall at the Section 21 Land Use CDE held at Kaskaskia College.
Team members included Zach Blacklock, Mallory Adams, Lucas Hurst, Zac Smith, and Kaitlyn McLearin.
Individually in the contest, McLearin, Hurst, Smith, and Adams took 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th, repectively.

Raina Jones and Lamanda Bean attended the District V Reporter's Workshop at Rend Lake College on September 15. They learned about how to promote FFA and our Chapter to our members and the community.
Our Chapter has spent it's fair share of time at this years DuQuoin State Fair. This year we started off the Fair with the Livestock Judging event on Saturday, August 25, 2007. We then traveled back on Monday, August 27 to participate in the Farmyard Follies event. Our Chapter placed 6th out of 25 FFA Chapters during the event. Then on August 28, several members attended the SIU_C BBQ at the Governor's Mansion on the Fair grounds to assist the Block & Bridle club serve food. .jpg)

Mt. Vernon FFA President, Anthony Graham, was rated as one of the top 10 Presidents in the State of Illinois at this years Illinois State FFA Convention. He was recognized on stage for the award. Graham was also sworn in as the new Section 21 FFA President for the coming year.
The 2007-2008 Officer team was sworn in at the May FFA meeting. Officer members include: Raina Jones_Reporter, Nick Catron_Treasurer, David Clifton_President, Stephen Chambliss_Vice-President, Levi England_Secretary, and Bryson Owens_Sentinel.
Anthony Graham (Second from left) was elected the "New" Section 21 FFA President during elections held at Mt. Vernon High School on April 30, 2007. Graham will serve as president while attending Rend Lake College in the fall.The Mt. Vernon Alumni handed out five scholarships at this years banquet. Those receiving the scholarship included: Anthony Graham, Brent Richardson, Jennifer Dagg, Shannon Loman, and Timothy Oliger.
Star Greenhand Awarded
Austyn Taylor, Lamanda Bean, Mallory Adams, Samuel Oliger, Kaitlyn McLearin, and Brandon Rathe were awarded the Star Greenhand Award at this years FFA Banquet. This award is given out to the Top Greenhands for the year.

Raina Jones and Lacy Pranga received this years "Strive to Succeed" Award at this year's banquet. This award is given to the FFA member who shows the best growth over the past year.

Eight Mt. Vernon FFA members attended the State Ag Legislative Day in Springfield. The members were able to talk to State Senators and Representatives as well as tour the local sites in Springfield.

POULTRY: Section 21 Poultry CDE was held at Vandalia High School on Tuesday, March 13. Our Chapter took 1st place for the first time in several years. We also had several members place in the top 10 of the event. Mallory Adams took 1st in the event, Raina Jones took 5th, and Brandon Rathe ended up in 10th overall. Lacy Pranga, Anthony Graham, Kaitlyn McLearin, and Austyn Taylor also participated and placed in the top 25 of the event. The team will now travel to the State CDE event at Shelbyville High School on Saturday, March 16th. Great job everyone!!
AG SCIENCE: On Thursday, March 15, the District V Ag Science fair was held at Rend Lake College. Fifty-two FFA members from around Southern Illinois participated in the event. Mt. Vernon FFA President, Anthony Graham took 2nd in the entire event with his project on the best environments for plant growth. Congratulations to Anthony!!
National FFA Week wrapped up with the annual Section 21 Bowling tournament on Saturday, February 24th. Mt. Vernon team #1 consisting of: Stephen Chambliss, Anthony Graham, Raina Jones, Cassie Bruns, and Rebecca Hiatt placed 1st out of fourteen teams in the tournament. Hiatt took high series of the tournament, while Mt. Vernon FFA member Grant MacEachern took high game.
Eighth grade recruitment has been in high swing over the past few weeks. Our members have attended all area feeder schools to promote the Agriculture program and FFA. During each visit we describe the benefits of agriculture and inform the students about the different agriculture classes. We also hand out important information about the FFA and how it can benefit the students when the become Mt. Vernon High School students. Freshman Samuel Oliger is pictured handing out information about our Agriculture courses and FFA Chapter.
The Made For Excellence Conference was recently held at the Holiday Inn in Colinsville, Illinois. Five members from the Mt. Vernon FFA attended the event. The students attended several leadership training activities instructed by the State FFA Officer team. Those pictued include State FFA Vice President, Patrick Holland, Mt. Vernon FFA members, Austyn Taylor, Laura Fleri, Brandon Rathe, Lamanda Bean, and Samuel Oliger.

Mr. Kabat was recently recognized by the local Veterans Association for his service to the Jefferson county area and the local Veterans. Mr. Kabat was presented with the H. "Scot" Thompson Memorial Award during a special ceremony on Veterans Day.
Former Illinois FFA President, Kacy Baugher, was elected as National FFA Secretary at the National FFA Convention this year. Kacy was a member of the Windsor High School FFA Chapter and finished in the top 16 in the National Prepared Public Speaking CDE during her time in FFA at Windsor.This year Leadership Training School, also known as LTS, was held at Salem High School on Tuesday, October 3, 2006.
We are so excited to announce that our Chapter will receive a very special honor called the 3rd Annual H. Scott Thompson Memorial Award from the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 9233 on Saturday November 11, 2006. National FFA Organization http://www.ffa.org
